If you want to keep a motorcycle operating properly, you better not neglect the motorcycle battery. If the motorcycle battery is dead, then the motorcycle clearly cannot ride the roads. A motorcycle that can't move is mere decoration, and who wants that kind of a lawn ornament?
Have a Little Responsibility
A motorcycle, to many, represents freedom and the open roads. There is an almost mythic quality to the motorcycle because it represents freedom and, in some cases, rebellion. While those outside the realm of motorcycle worlds may not fully appreciate all that a motorcycle has to offer, those inside that world understand full well the potential that a motorcycle has to offer.
So, leaving the keys in the ignition and leaving the lights on by mistake pretty much undermines all the value a motorcycle has. After all, it has a dead motorcycle battery now. So, the motorcycle becomes little more than a symbolic representation of freedom until a new motorcycle battery can be purchased. Now, that will make the owner of the motorcycle look like anything other than a free spirited rebel. Such a misdeed will make the owner of the motorcycle look neglectful and irresponsible. Certainly not the image one would want to project. Not to mention, there is the little matter of now having to purchase a new motorcycle battery.
There is not much to making sure one does not make the dreadful error of allowing a motorcycle battery to drain. While there is no magic bullet to safeguarding a battery from draining, there are a couple of little steps that can be undertaken so as to safeguard a battery a little bit beyond the average realm of safe battery keeping.
One such step is never leaving the headlights on. This is probably the most common mistake both motorcycle and automobile drivers make -- probably because it is so minor that it becomes overlooked. Don't make that mistake! You don't want to be the person getting paged at the supermarket because someone else noticed your Harley's lights shining in the parking lot at noon.
The other suggestion is not to leave the motorcycle parked without starting the motorcycle up for longer than a week. This will usually kill a battery or, at the very least, render the motorcycle battery so weak that it will need a charge in order to start up. Always be sure to start up the cycle at least once a week to avoid such a problem.
